Make Some Waves is Berlin School of Sound’s flagship semester program in sound design and music production.

Over 12 weeks, you’ll move through sound art, live electronics, modular synthesis, game audio, music production, mixing, mastering, and audiovisual performance β€” each module taught by a different working artist from Berlin’s scene.

You won’t study music from the outside. You’ll make it, perform it, and present it on stage at ACUD at the end of the semester.

3 groups available Β· 7–10 students per group Β· 44 hours total

Course Structure

Module I β€” Sound Art Foundations Β· Weeks 1–2

Instructor: Antje Vowinckel

Week 1 β€” Introduction to Sound Art
History and theory of sound art. Semiotics of sound. Analysis of pioneering works. Deep listening exercises. Introduction to experimental composition.

Week 2 β€” Text and Sound as Intermedia
Sound poetry fundamentals. Experimental spoken word techniques. Hands-on microphone and voice recording. Basic audio editing. Language-based sound works.

Module II β€” Live Electronics Β· Week 3

Instructor: RETHE

Week 3 β€” Live Performance Techniques
Combining hardware and software in a live set β€” Elektron Digitakt, Digitone, Ableton Live. Creative control behind the machines.

Module III β€” Modular Synthesis & Electronics Β· Weeks 4–5

Instructor: StΓ©phane LefranΓ§ois

Week 4 β€” Introduction to Modular Synthesis
Fundamentals, patch cables, signal routing, oscillators, filters, envelope generators. Your first ambient and drone compositions.

Week 5 β€” Complex Patching & Generative Systems
Cross-modulation, feedback loops, sequencers and randomisation. Creating evolving textures and self-playing systems. Modular in live performance.

Module IV β€” Field Recording & Game Audio Β· Weeks 6–7

Week 6 β€” Field Recording & Extended Techniques Β· Antje Vowinckel
Advanced field recording in Berlin. Space and object resonance. Processing recordings electronically. Site-specific sound installation concepts.

Week 7 β€” Game Audio & Interactive Sound Β· Dario Beckmann
Music for games β€” FMOD, Unreal Engine, Wwise. Interactive audio design. Adaptive music systems. Game sound effects and environmental audio.

Module V β€” Performance & Media Art Β· Week 8

Instructor: Georg Werner

Week 8 β€” Audiovisual Installation & Performance
Fundamentals of audiovisual installation art. Spatial sound design. Performance art with sound. Body, voice, and space. Professional documentation and portfolio building.

Module VI β€” Production & Technology Β· Weeks 9–11

Instructor: Henning Grambow

Week 9 β€” Electronic Music Production
Music production fundamentals. Studio workflow. Ableton Live and Pro Tools. Recording techniques.

Week 10 β€” Advanced Production & Sound Design
Professional mixing techniques. Mastering principles. AI plugins in production. Music business basics β€” publishing, sync licensing, royalties. Sound design for film and media.

Week 11 β€” Advanced Mixing & Mastering
Parallel processing. Creative sound design in mixing. Spatial audio. Mastering chain architecture. LUFS and reference standards. Genre-specific mastering. AI mastering tools β€” when to use them and when not to.

Week 12 β€” Final Project & Professional Development

Final project mixing and mastering. Portfolio development. Music publishing and distribution. Creating professional demo reels.

Final Concert at ACUD Kunsthaus β€” your work performed live in front of an audience. Friends, family, Berlin’s music community. This is what the semester has been building toward.


Your Final Project

Each student creates:
β†’ A 5–10 minute sound composition or installation
β†’ Written documentation of the creative process
β†’ A short presentation of concept and methodology
β†’ A technical rider for live performance (if applicable)

What you need to bring

No music production experience required. You need:

β†’ Your own headphones (professional recommended)
β†’ A notebook
β†’ Openness to experiment and collaborate
β†’ Basic English (for technical instructions)
