Transform your sound into Immersive experiences!

Description

ABOUT THIS MASTERCLASS

Discover Your Voice is a 3-day immersive masterclass at ACUD Kunsthaus in Berlin-Mitte. Over three intensive sessions, you will explore the voice as more than just sound. Think of it as a living tool that shapes space, connects with others, and unlocks new dimensions of creativity.

This is not a singing class. Instead, it is a practice of presence, resonance, and creative freedom through the voice.

Virginie Dubois will guide you through a transformative journey into vocal improvisation and deep listening. Throughout the workshop, sound meets philosophy, art, and the body.

Whether you are a musician, performer, sound artist, or simply someone curious about the expressive potential of your voice — this masterclass offers a rare space to explore, experiment, and discover.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Over three days, you will learn how to use your voice as a creative instrument. You will practice deep listening techniques that sharpen your awareness of sound, space, and the body.

In addition, you will explore vocal improvisation methods and extended voice techniques. You will also work collaboratively with other participants, creating together in real time.

By the end of the masterclass, you will have developed your own personal vocal language and a deeper understanding of listening as a creative and relational practice.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Virginie Dubois is a sound artist, experimental composer, and researcher based between France and the Netherlands. Her work explores the physical and perceptual dimensions of sound. More specifically, she focuses on the relationship between voice, body, space, and listening as a conscious practice.

She holds a master’s degree in Economics from La Sorbonne in Paris. After that, she completed two further master’s degrees — in Music at the ArtScience Interfaculty in The Hague, and in Design at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

Currently, she is an artist-in-residence at Locus Sonus Vitae at ESA-AIX in France. She is also a Visiting Academic at Cambridge Digital Humanities.

Her artistic practice spans sound installations, electroacoustic composition, experimental performance, soundwalks, and collective listening experiences. Furthermore, she is the founder of Why So Silent? — an audio/visual series exploring ambient and experimental sound across cities including Berlin, Stockholm, and Seoul.

PROGRAM

Day 1 — Friday, 8 May: Unlocking the Voice

The first day focuses on foundations. You will be introduced to the voice as an instrument and creative tool. Through breathing and resonance exercises, you will connect with the body as a sound source.

→ Introduction to the voice as instrument and creative tool → Breathing, resonance, and the body as sound source → Deep listening exercises — tuning into yourself and the space → First vocal explorations — releasing inhibition and finding freedom → The philosophy of listening — sound as relational practice

Day 2 — Saturday, 9 May: Voice in Space

On the second day, you will go deeper into vocal improvisation. You will explore the relationship between your voice, architecture, and acoustics. Group exercises will challenge you to listen and respond in real time.

→ Vocal improvisation techniques and extended voice → The relationship between voice, architecture, and acoustics → Group exercises — listening and responding in real time → Working with silence, texture, and dynamics → Sound as a tool for connection and collective expression

Day 3 — Sunday, 10 May: Integration & Creation

The final day brings everything together. You will develop your personal vocal language and create collaboratively with the group. The session closes with reflection, feedback, and guidance on how to continue your practice.

→ Developing your personal vocal language → Collaborative vocal performance — creating together → Deep listening as a socio-political and artistic practice → Recording and capturing vocal explorations → Reflection, feedback, and pathways forward
