Culmination of the SOUNDING ART Course 2023

Sound leaves a tail… in all of it’s meanings, connotations and natural habitats…

Artists:
Manuel Carbone
Lutz Gallmeister
Harpa
Simon Hill
Samaquias Lorta
Rami Abi Rafi
Kimi Recor
Samantha Tiussi

Rami – INSIJAM / انسجام, which means harmony in Arabic. Inspired from the work of Maria Chavez, mainly her approach to “abstract turntablism” – during this performance I attempt to revisit the notion of a hybrid DJ set.

Kimi Recor combinesa gong , contact microphones, pedals, synths, and vocals to craft a mesmerizing and haunting soundscape.

Manuel Carbone – composition of magnetic field sounds recorded on tape and manipulated/filtered on stage with the use of effect boxes and pedals

In a sound live performance, Samantha Tiussi will guide the audience’s perception through a spiritual labyrinth of sound, using electronically manipulated recordings of glass. This performance not only showcases the glass’ sonic capabilities, but also serves as a metaphorical journey of self-discovery and introspection. By layering, distorting, and remixing these glass sounds, she constructs a complex sonic labyrinth that echoes the twists and turns we often encounter in our spiritual journeys.

Samaquias – Ecologies may be interpreted as connected networks. Those connections between various life forms, the push and pull between entities. Terrariums are often understood as the recycling of nutrients and sustainable maintenance. Acoustic Terrarium seeks to create an acoustic ecology between performer and listener. An exploration of acoustics that sustains and maintains a relationship with the ecosystem the piece inhabits. Audiences can explore a performance that exchanges acoustics and reimagines acousmatic interpretation within an acoustic terrarium.

Simon Hill – The performance will explore the hypnotic connection between sound and movement. By attaching accelerometers to harmonically moving objects, they become organic low-frequency oscillators, bringing their natural modulation into the digital domain.

Lutz Gallmeister – Water_stories:
Water stories are sound paintings and texts inspired by water.
Each story is composed of water field recordings, text, and live guitar playing.

Furthermore, what technical studies and (if applicable) new notational approaches for melody, rhythm, timbre, and interaction derived from these metaphors can best facilitate this goal?
