Four days. One studio. Your first real modular patch.

Early Bird: €549 · Regular: €649 14:00–18:00 daily · Max 10 participants · English · Berlin

You don’t need to know what a patch cable is. You don’t need to own a single module. You need four days, a willingness to experiment, and curiosity about what happens when you stop programming music and start building it with your hands.

This is a hands-on intensive in Stéphane Lefrançois’s private Berlin studio — a fully equipped professional space where you work directly with Eurorack systems in a group of maximum 10 people. No lecture halls. No YouTube tutorials. Just you, the modules, and someone who’s been doing this for years.

The Program

Day 1 — Introduction to Modular Synthesis Modular fundamentals. Patch cables and signal routing. Oscillators, filters, envelope generators. Understanding voltage control. Your first ambient and drone compositions. Introduction to VCV Rack — setting up, downloading modules, basics of patching.

Day 2 — Sound Design & Exploration Deep dive into oscillator behaviour, filter types and envelope shaping. Building expressive patches from scratch. Learning to trust your ears over your eyes. Drum patching, FM synthesis, self-evolving patches.

Day 3 — Complex Patching & Generative Systems Cross-modulation and feedback loops. Sequencers and randomisation for generative patches. Creating evolving textures and self-playing systems that surprise even you.

Day 4 — Modular in Performance Modular in a live context. Building sets, managing complexity, improvisation strategies. Final session: each participant presents a live patch to the group.

What’s included

→ 16 hours of hands-on instruction across 4 days → Full access to Stéphane’s professional Eurorack system → Maximum 10 participants — guaranteed hands-on time every session → Private studio environment — not a classroom → Certificate of completion

Your instructor

Stéphane Lefrançois is a drummer, recording engineer, performing artist, DJ and teacher based in Berlin. He has run studios in London, Ibiza and Berlin, and founded Secret Music — a label releasing electronic music with soul. At Berlin School of Sound he leads the modular synthesis curriculum, bringing years of professional studio and live performance experience directly to students.

He doesn’t teach from a textbook. He teaches from the studio.

Who is this for?

Complete beginners are welcome — no prior knowledge of modular synthesis required. If you already patch, this workshop will push you into more complex territory. What matters is curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

12 weeks. Two artists. One semester that changes how you hear the world.

Sound Art for Beginners is a hands-on introduction to sound as a creative medium. Over 12 weeks, you’ll record, build, compose, and perform — guided step by step by two professional artists who have spent decades working at the intersection of sound, technology, and art.

You won’t just study sound art — you’ll make it.

You’ll build your own microphones and electronic instruments from scratch. You’ll go out into Berlin and record the city. You’ll compose electroacoustic pieces in a DAW. You’ll experiment with your voice. You’ll learn to code sound with Pure Data. And at the end, you’ll present your work in a public performance at ACUD.

Every session concludes with a listening session or deep-listening exercise — training your ears as much as your hands.

Max 8 participants. Two instructors. Starting September 2026.

Your Instructors

Antje Vowinckel
One of Germany’s most respected sound artists and radio art composers. Over 30 years of electroacoustic compositions, radio plays, and sound installations broadcast and performed across Europe. At Berlin School of Sound she teaches composition, field recording, voice work, and performance.

Georg Werner
Berlin-based artist and engineer working at the intersection of sound, electronics, and installation. Specializes in DIY electronics, sensor-based instruments, and site-specific sound installations. He builds things that make sound — and teaches you to do the same.

Programme

Module 1 · 14.09.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Introduction to Sound Art — genres, history, theory. What is sound art? Where did it come from? Where is it going? A foundation for everything that follows.

Module 2 · 21.09.26 · Georg Werner
Electroacoustic Principles in Practice, Part I — understanding sound by building it. Construct your own DIY microphone and DIY loudspeaker from basic components.

Module 3 · 28.09.26 · Georg Werner
Electroacoustic Principles in Practice, Part II — build your own DIY contact microphone, hydrophone, and preamp. Tools that capture sound in ways a normal mic can’t.

Module 4 · 05.10.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Field Recording — we meet at a lost place in Berlin and record sounds with different types of microphones. The city becomes your instrument.

Module 5 · 05.10.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Electroacoustic Composition, Part I — working with a DAW. Organizing sessions, organizing sounds, working with plugins. Your first steps in composing with recorded material.

Module 6 · 12.10.26 · Georg Werner
Sensors and Electronics for Performance, Part I — build a chirping circuit powered by the sun. Your introduction to electronics as a creative tool.

Module 7 · 19.10.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Creative Voice Lab — automatic speaking, dialect karaoke, telephone pranks, extended voice techniques, street interviews, AI voices. Your voice as raw material — pushed in every direction.

Module 8 · 26.10.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Electroacoustic Composition, Part II — dramaturgy, creating depth, transitions, poly-layering. Taking your compositions from sketches to finished pieces.

Module 9 · 02.11.26 · Georg Werner
Sensors and Electronics for Performance, Part II — build a sound player with sensor input. Your instruments start responding to the world around them.

Module 10 · 09.11.26 · Antje Vowinckel
Performance Lab — build your own setup with amplified objects, playbacks, voice, instruments, visuals, pedals, MIDI controllers. Learn to perform with everything you’ve built and recorded.

Module 11 · 16.11.26 · Georg Werner
Site-Specific Installation and Electronics, Part III — using a passive system in a specific place. Your work begins to inhabit space.

Module 12 · 23.11.26 · Georg Werner
Introduction to Pure Data — your first steps in programming sound. Free, open-source, endlessly powerful. Build your own digital instruments and sound environments.

Final Presentation · 30.11.26 · Antje Vowinckel & Georg Werner
Public presentation of your final performance and composition work at ACUD Kunsthaus. Friends, family, and Berlin’s sound art community are invited. This is your moment.

3 days. 20 years of knowledge. One studio.

Most producers spend a decade figuring out what you’ll learn this weekend.

Błażej Malinowski has released on Semantica, Warm Up Recordings, Silent Season. Founded his own label. Built a sound so distinctive that people recognize it in the first eight bars. This July, he opens his entire process — for you.

📅 03 – 05 July 2026 · ACUD Kunsthaus, Berlin-Mitte

BY THE END OF THIS MASTERCLASS:

→ You’ll understand how a professional track is actually built — layer by layer, decision by decision
→ You’ll know exactly which plugins matter and why — no more guessing
→ You’ll have seen a complete track built from zero, in real time, in front of you
→ You’ll have created something together with Błażej as a group
→ You’ll leave with feedback on your own music — directly from him
→ You’ll know how to release music, work with labels, and build a career

After this weekend, you won’t just produce differently. You’ll think differently.

PROGRAM

DAY 1 — Friday, 03 July · 17:30–21:30
Inside the Track

Błażej takes one of his own productions apart, piece by piece. Every layer — drums, bass, atmospheres, textures, effects — isolated and explained. Then a full walkthrough of the exact plugins he uses daily and why. The evening ends with a deep dive into his signature sound design: how he builds pads, drones, and atmospheric elements from scratch.

17:30 – 17:45 — Welcome and introduction
17:45 – 18:45 — Track deconstruction — breaking down a finished track
18:45 – 19:30 — Plugin walkthrough — the tools Błażej uses daily and why
19:30 – 19:45 — Break
19:45 – 20:30 — Sound design deep dive — pads, drones, atmospheres from scratch
20:30 – 21:30 — Q&A and open discussion — 20 years of production insights

DAY 2 — Saturday, 04 July · 17:30–21:30
Building from Zero

Błażej starts a track from nothing — in real time, in front of you. You follow his creative process from the very first sound to a working arrangement. Then: Ableton Live session structure, live set building, and mixing decisions made during the creative process — not just at the end.

17:30 – 18:30 — Starting a track from scratch — from first sound to working arrangement
18:30 – 19:15 — Workflow in Ableton Live — project organization, channels, sends, effects
19:15 – 19:30 — Break
19:30 – 20:30 — Building a live set in Ableton — how Błażej prepares live performances
20:30 – 21:30 — Mixing on the go — EQ, compression, spatial effects as part of the creative process

DAY 3 — Sunday, 05 July · 17:30–21:30
Create Together

Everything comes together. You build a track as a group — Błażej guides the process and makes decisions with you. Then: individual feedback on your own music. Bring a track — he listens and tells you exactly what he thinks. The evening closes with the business side: releasing music, working with labels, building a sustainable career.

17:30 – 18:30 — Collaborative session — building a track together
18:30 – 19:15 — Participant feedback — Błażej listens to your work
19:15 – 19:30 — Break
19:30 – 20:30 — The business side — releasing music, labels, self-releases, career strategy
20:30 – 21:30 — Final Q&A, wrap-up, and networking

WHO IS THIS FOR

You produce electronic music — techno, ambient, experimental — and you’re serious about getting better. You want to understand how someone at the top of the craft actually works. Not theory. Not YouTube tutorials. The real process, live, in front of you.

Whether you’ve been producing for six months or six years — this weekend will change how you work.

FAQ

Do I need production experience?
Yes — basic knowledge of a DAW is helpful. But you don’t need to be advanced. If you can open Ableton and make sounds, you’re ready.

Should I bring my own music?
Yes. On Day 3 there’s a feedback session — bring a track or a work in progress. Błażej will listen and give you direct, honest feedback.

What DAW does Błażej use?
Ableton Live. The sessions are Ableton-focused but the principles apply to any DAW.

Refund policy?
No refunds. If you can’t attend, your payment applies to any future BSoS workshop or course. Spots are transferable at any time.

12 weeks. Your compositions. Your voice. Your live set.

Make Some Waves Semester 2 is where foundation becomes creation.

You already know the tools. Now you use them. Over 12 weeks you’ll compose complete tracks, build complex modular patches, learn to mix and master at a professional level, and perform your work live at ACUD at the end of the semester.

This semester adds something Semester 1 doesn’t have: Nadia Struiwigh — Tresor Berlin resident, Dekmantel artist, one of the most distinctive voices in European electronic music — joins the teaching roster for the first time.

3 groups available · Max 10 students per group · 44 hours total

Choose your group

Group 1 — Mondays · 17:30–21:30
Group 2 — Tuesdays · 17:30–21:30

11 sessions × 4 hours = 44 hours per group

By the end of the semester you will:

→ Have composed complete electronic music tracks from concept to finished production
→ Know how to apply music theory — harmony, scales, chord progressions — to your own work
→ Master advanced Ableton Live production and arrangement
→ Create complex generative compositions using modular synthesizers
→ Have mixed and mastered your own tracks at a professional level
→ Have performed live with hardware and software at ACUD Kunsthaus
→ Have a portfolio and demo reel you can actually send to labels and promoters
→ Have direct connections to Berlin’s electronic music scene
